I like this guy's video and explanation and while he is definitely wrong on the eDRAM part, the rest of it is pretty much the truth. The Wii U can do all the effects of the PS4/XB1 if the code is optimized and developed from the ground up for the system. Xbox 360 vs PC is a great example of console ports running badly or requiring a ton of overhead power on the PC in order to get those games running well.
Now about that eDRAM speed:
Basically the Wii U eDRAM is decently fast and could range from 51GB/s to 102GB/s (most likely the lower) but no where near 1000 GB/s. The 12.8 GB/s for the DDR3 memory combined with the fast eDRAM speed gives the Wii U at the lowest/worst case scenario a 64 GB/s bandwidth.
Nate in the video above seemed to only be referring to the theoretical performance of 1000 GB/s that the Playstation 4 could have been clocked at if Sony decided to put eDRAM in that console; nothing about the eDRAM that he mentions has anything to do with the Wii U only the fact that it has 32MB of it and that it's fast for what it is.

this all sounds good but no one will believe you until we see games on the same level as ps4 and xb1. Seriously name one game on Wii U that has the texture detail as the characters in RYSE. i am not doubting what you are saying becuase i know Nintendo knows how to make great powerful hardware when they want to... but as of right now even though we have some great looking games on Wii U the console is just not performing on the same level as ps4/xb1.

ReplyDeletethe only bottleneck is the return of data processed by the edram logic like the rops to the gpu, which stands for 32gb/s
just do the math and you see it doesnt work
imagine we have two people running from point a to point bm do some work and then return
at the beginning person 1can run at 32GB/s and person 2at 64GB/s, person 2 arrives 2x faster but must do a work that takes about 4x more time than person 2, so when returning both should get at point a at the same time. But, this is only if wii u is usion the whole bunch of 32MB of edram, which in ports clearly arent using all the edram, must likely they are using just 10MB cause ports come from 360, so wii u doesnt achieve maxium speed, just 3 times less the maxium speed, so you are limited to about 22GB/s of those 64GB/s
so no, it doesnt woprk thatway cause that bandwidth you tal about is for the entire 32MB of edram
remebertat must ports dont even squeeze the edram as shinen says cause when you port fro 360 you only have availble 10MB of edram, so obviously the bandwidth is even less. This could be solved iof the developers made a ground up game or at least rework the port to chnage thingin the code, but that takes time and money and effort
besides, shinen says that can achieve 720p with double buffering with just 7MBof edram with sigle pass, where is the 360 you need the whole 10MMB for this and use multippasses , meaning that 7MB of edram fior wii u should provide atleast the same bandwidth that 360 has for its 10MB to achieve the 720p
you shouldnt be surprised if has a bandwith of 500GB/s to 1 teraflop
gamecube flipper edram had a bandwidth of 10GB/s and that was only for 1MB of edram and a technology of 2000

the proble is that must third parties dont take profit of it cause is easier to programm for the main ram insteadof the edram and thats something that even sony confirmed and thats why doesnt use edram
besides, when doing ports is even ore unlike developers take profitof the edram
